Zimbabwe has been through its most difficult week perhaps since the post election violence of August 2018. On the 12 January President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced a hefty hike in the price of fuel. This angered citizens and a three day stay away from work was called for by the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions.
Violent protests broke out and confrontations with the police and army saw the loss of life. The government launched major crackdown on dissent including the shutting down of the internet.
