Defend the Consitution Platform (DCP)’s parliamentary and political engagement coordinator, Agency Gumbo, says the proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 3 is far from guaranteed passage.
According to him, some lawmakers within the ruling Zanu PF have quietly voiced unease about the amendments, hinting at cracks within the party ranks.
Gumbo stressed that the decisive moment will come during the parliamentary vote, where the definition of a two-thirds majority could shape the outcome.
He argued that the threshold should be determined strictly by the number of votes actually cast, mirroring the method used in electing the Speaker.
He added that opposition groups are preparing to challenge any ambiguity around the voting process. They are demanding clear rules on how the majority will be calculated, while also pushing authorities to formally announce plans for a referendum.
With divisions emerging and questions over procedure unresolved, the battle over the Bill is set to intensify in the House.
The DCP led by Jameson Timba, has taken its fight against Zimbabwe’s proposed constitutional changes beyond the country’s borders.
Speaking at a press briefing in Harare on Monday, Timba revealed that the group has formally reached out to key international and regional bodies — including the United Nations, the African Union and the Southern African Development Community — to flag concerns over the planned reforms.
The move marks an escalation in efforts to challenge the amendments, with the platform pushing for citizens to be directly involved in any changes to the Constitution.
