Zimbabwe is to relax its black ownership laws, as the country’s economy shows signs of slowing down. Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa says the country’s indigenisation ministry is to submit plans to cabinet to tailor equity thresholds for each sector.

Morgan Tsvangirai has hit back at his suspension from the opposition Movement for Democratic Change party, saying the meeting that passed the decision was illegal. Tsvangirai and six others were suspended for abuse of party funds and violation of the party constitution. Tsvangirai has been president of the MDC since its formation in 1999.

The Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe, has just turned 90 and is showing no sign of stepping aside. To some he’s a villain who’s all but destroyed his country’s once thriving economy; to others he’s a hero fighting to liberate Africa from white exploitation.

The BBC has screened an in-depth interview with Wilf Mbanga, founder and editor of The Zimbabwean, which recalls his friendship with President Robert Mugabe that dates back to 1974 when Mugabe and other nationalist leaders were released from jail and fled the country to pursue struggle for independence. Zimbabwe marked 34 years of independence from British rule on Friday. The commemorations come at a time when the economic performance is low and millions in the country are in need of food aid.
