Meanwhile the United Nations has urged the government of Zimbabwe to respect the right to peaceful protests. The UN was reacting to violent clashes between Zimbabwe police and opposition demonstrators, who were calling on President Robert Mugabe to step down. Police used tear gas and water cannons against protesters, in violation of a high court order, which gave permission for peaceful demonstrations.
