Police in Zimbabwe arrested 12 nurses protesting outside state hospitals on Monday demanding to be paid in U.S. dollars as inflation running at nearly 800% was eroding their salaries, the country’s nurses union said.
Zimbabwe Nurses and other health workers at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospital’s in Harare have walked out and are currently demonstrating over poor salaries while being watched by riot police.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread around the world, the Zimbabwean government has recruited more nurses to help fight the disease. The government lifted a moratorium on employment of public servants to allow the increase in the number of healthcare workers.
