Riot police fought pitched battles with street vendors in Gweru on Monday during a failed bid to clear the city centre of informal traders accused of fuelling an outbreak of typhoid disease.
Vendors took to the streets armed with stones and other objects to pelt police and council vehicles, vowing to remain on pavements in front of OK Zimbabwe and Pick and Pay supermarkets.
